MONTESSORI MATHEMATICS – WHEN NUMBERS COME “ALIVE” IN CHILDREN’S HANDS
For many people, mathematics is a world of dry numbers and complicated rules. But where does mathematics truly come from? And is it something naturally present in each of us?
In Montessori, mathematics does not begin with abstract symbols. It begins with real experiences:
Children feel quantity through Number Rods, Sandpaper Numerals, and Counting Boxes
They see 1–10–100–1000 through the Golden Beads
They understand the four operations as part of life:
addition is bringing together, subtraction is taking away,
multiplication is repeated addition, and division is fair sharing
Children work with their hands first to understand, and only later commit to memory—moving from the concrete to the abstract, from “thinking with the hands” to “thinking with the mind,” with confidence and joy.
Adults do not “pour knowledge” into children. Instead, they prepare the environment, observe with care, offer guidance at the right moment, and respect each child’s developmental rhythm.
What children gain is not just the ability to calculate correctly, but lasting thinking skills: logic, concentration, precision, problem-solving, independence—and above all, a love for mathematics that stays with them for life.
We invite parents to watch the video and see how Montessori mathematics is planted and grows along a child’s journey.
